Oil Tanker Fire Shuts Down I-91

Published:

An oil tanker truck fire shut down I-91 in Meriden, Connecticut this morning after a crash that occurred around 9:40AM.

Police say that the tanker from Ron’s Family Fuel in Plantsville rolled over this morning, spilling 3,000 gallons of fuel. They say that the truck struck the Murdock Avenue overpass between exits 16 and 15, but they are continuing to investigate. One witness claims that the truck blew a tire, which caused it to hit the bridge

The bridge did suffer visible damage and a bridge inspector was called to the scene.

Authorities also say that a passenger car caught fire during the crash.

The truck driver was pulled from the cab by a good samaritan and transported to the hospital, but there is no further information on his condition.

Southbound I-91 is expected to reopen around 11:30AM, but authorities say that the northbound lanes could be closed for hours.
