Police Release Footage In Fatal 18 Wheeler Hit And Run Case

Published:

The Laredo Police Department has released surveillance video that they hope will help them find a truck driver who they believe is responsible for last month’s fatal hit and run.

Pedestrian Struck in the Road During Rain and Poor Visibility Conditions

The crash took place on November 27 in the 5200 block of San Bernardo Avenue in Laredo, Texas. Police say that an 18 wheeler hit 45-year-old Richard Mathew Costilla as he walked in the street to avoid stepping in “a large body of water.” Costilla was killed in the crash.

Police say that the truck driver stopped and looked around the rear of the truck, then drove off. Some reports have speculated that because of rain and poor visibility, the truck driver might not have been aware that he hit a pedestrian.

The surveillance video shows a truck driver who the police believe is responsible getting out of his vehicle at a building that was formerly the Monterrey Inn.

Video Shows Truck Driver Getting Out and Examining Truck

The driver can be seen examining the back of the truck were it is likely that Costilla would have been hit. After a few minutes, a PT Cruiser pulls into the parking lot. The truck driver gets in and they disappear from the video for about 45 minutes. When the PT Cruiser returns, the truck driver gets out and drives away.

Police Ask for Help Locating Truck Driver

Police believe that the truck was a Freightliner pulling an orange trailer.

If you recognize the truck driver or the PT Cruiser driver or have any information on the incident, authorities encourage you to call the Laredo Police at 795-2800, or Crime Stoppers at 727-TIPS.
