A prison bus transporting 50 inmates collided with an overturned truck on I-8 between Casa Grande and Gila Bend in Arizona early this morning.
Arizona officials received word that a truck hauling herbicide had rolled over on westbound I-8 around 1:08 a.m., then learned 5 minutes later that the Arizona Department of Corrections bus had hit the truck.
Officials say that 22 people were injured during the crash, 20 of them prisoners and two of them Department of Corrections workers. The bus driver sustained serious injury. Two of the prisoners were also severely hurt.
The 30 uninjured inmates were returned to Lewis prison. The Department of Public Safety reported that all inmates stayed on the scene to direct traffic and provide first aid to the injured. All of the inmates were minimum security prisoners.
The truck driver was not hurt during the accident.
Arizona authorities say that all prisoners are accounted for.
