Project To Lessen Otay Mesa Border Wait Times For Truckers

Published:

Authorities have broken ground on a new freeway connector that they say will reduce border wait times at the Otay Mesa POE from four hours to 20 minutes.

The freeway connector will save truckers from having to use crowded local streets to deliver goods. The freeway connector will SR 905 and Route 11 to SR 125. The project will also incorporate variable rate tolling — meaning higher tolls during higher traffic times — to control the flow of traffic. Improvements in signage will also help both passenger and commercial vehicle drivers plan the most efficient routes.

The $800 million project is being funded by tolls on roads leading up to the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.

The project is projected to be completed by 2017.
