The FMCSA today announced a proposed rule that would require CMV passengers to wear safety belts.
The proposed rule was published today in the the FMCSA’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking. The FMCSA is seeking public comment on the proposed rule.
For many years, federal rules have required CMV drivers to use seat belts; this proposed rule would “hold both trucking companies and commercial truck drivers responsible for ensuring that any passenger riding in the truck cab are also buckled up,” the FMCSA states.
According to the FMCSA, 275 truck occupants who were killed in crashes in 2013 were not wearing seat belts.
