Sheriff Issues Warning About Rest Stop Scammers

Published:

The Sheriff of Orangeburg County, South Carolina, is warning travellers about a scam taking place at local rest areas.

According to a report filed by a pastor, the scam took place at the I-26 eastbound rest area near mile marker 153. He said that he was approached by a man who claimed that another man nearby just won the lottery and would double any money that the pastor had on hand. The pastor pulled out a substantial amount of cash, but one of the men snatched it from him and the men fled the scene.

The Orangeburg County Sheriff asks anyone who is approached and asked for money at the rest area to call them at 803-534-3550. If you have any information about the scammers, you can call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
