Fatal Pile-Up Shuts Down I-80 Again, Hazmat Catches Fire

Published:

Another chain reaction crash on Wyoming’s I-80 between Laramie and Rawlins killed one and sent at least 16 people to the hospital today (April 20).

I-80 proved to be treacherous for drivers for the second time in three days as foggy conditions and slush are believed to have contributed to two trucks to crashing around 8 a.m. One of the trucks jackknifed across both westbound lanes. Between 21 and 40 vehicles then became part of the chain-reaction crash, slamming into the jackknifed truck and each other.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol says that 22,000-gallon tanker of Butyl Cellosolve caught fire during the crash, making clean-up extremely dangerous and difficult.

The Red Cross has opened a shelter at the 1st Christian Church at 2130 E. Garfield in Laramie to help those affected by the pile-up.

There is no word yet about when I-80 will reopen. For updates on the reopening time, you can visit www.wyoroad.info or call 1-888-WYO-ROAD.
