After a 13 month investigation, the California Highway Patrol has announced that the FedEx truck driver involved in a crash with a school bus that killed 10 and injured 39 is at fault, but they still have not determined the cause of the crash. The truck driver was among those who died in the accident.
The accident happened last April on I-5 in Orland, north of Sacramento. The truck collided head-on with a bus taking high school students to visit a university. There was apparently no attempt on the truck driver’s part to hit the brakes or otherwise avoid the crash.
California Highway Patrol Sargent Nathan Parson said, “the collision was caused, for unknown reasons, by the (FedEx truck) driver’s unsafe turning movement, and although fatigue or an undetermined medical condition may have contributed, there is no conclusive evidence.”
Some of the victim’s families were satisfied with the announcement, but others say that the investigation failed to answer the central question — what actually caused the crash.
The investigators did not find evidence of drugs or alcohol in the body of the FedEx driver, 32-year-old Tim Evans, but his body was too badly burned to determine whether he had failed asleep or whether a medical condition was to blame.
