I-35 Abuzz After Bee Truck Rolls, Cop Stuck In Swarmed Patrol Car

Published:

A truck hauling honeybees rolled on I-35 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, yesterday, causing major problems for cops trying to contain millions of angry insects.

The crash happened close to mile marker 72 on southbound I-35. Police say that the truck overturned as it took the exit 72 ramp, spilling all of the bee hives.

Beekeepers and police worked to rescue the bees as traffic backed up for 4 miles on I-35. The angry bees started swarming the police vehicles, leading several of the officers to speed down the highway in an attempt to shake off the insects.

As evening approached, the bees became more and more aggressive, so authorities decided to take action. They used heavy equipment to pile up the debris from the crash, including crates and hives. Then they doused the pile with gas and set it on fire.

The truck driver suffered only minor injuries and was released from the hospital.

Though many bees died as a result of the crash, beekeepers were able to save several hundred thousand.

You can watch the bees swarm an Oklahoma Highway Patrol car in the video below. Sheriff’s Deputy Carl Zink was briefly trapped by the thousands of swarming bees before the fire department sprayed them off his car.
