A truck hauling NASCAR stock cars to the Texas Motor Speedway for Michael Annett caught fire on I-20 in Longview, Texas last night.
Truck driver Michael Dennis Smith says that he and a passenger noticed smoke coming from the back of the truck and pulled over to find that there was a fire around the back of one of the stock cars. Smith and his passenger were able to detach the cab from the trailer, but when they tried to fight the fire with fire extinguishers, the flames were too much. Some onlookers called 911.
No one was hurt during the crash, but over $1 million worth of equipment was destroyed.
Investigators are still trying to determine what started the fire. There was a generator and 5 gallons of fuel in the trailer with the cars, but the generator was not running at the time of the fire. There was no fuel in the cars in the trailer.
The fire started in the same place that a fatal accident occurred earlier in the day.
The Number 46 car is expected to race as planned.
