Over 60 Vehicles Involved In Massive Pile-Up In Cheyenne, 150 Miles Of I-80 Closed

Published:

One hundred and fifty miles of I-80 between Cheyenne and Rawlins has been closed by heavy snow which caused a series of pile-ups involving over 60 vehicles.

Wyoming Highway Patrol says that 40 to 50 commercial vehicles and 20 passenger vehicles were involved in three separate pile-ups taking place in both the eastbound and westbound lanes at approximately the same time yesterday morning (April 16). The pile-ups happened around mile marker 342, about 20 miles west of Cheyenne.

Crews worked throughout the day Thursday trying to extract people from the wreckage. According to Laramie County Fire District 10 Chief Paul Pomeroy, “if you can picture semis on top of semis, cabs gone, and the extrication that they had to do, it is just – there’s nothing left of a lot of vehicles.”

27 people have been reported injured so far. Six of the injured suffered severe leg or spinal injuries. No fatalities have been reported yet.

Snow is expected to continue throughout the day. It isn’t clear when I-80 will reopen.
