Upper Macungie Township in Pennsylvania has approved an ordinance that will restrict truck traffic after residents complained about having to deal with big trucks on their roads.
The new ordinance forbids trucks longer than 30 feet from using the following roads:
· Farm Bureau and Memorial roads, between Tilghman Street and Chapmans Road
· Hilltop Road, between Haasadahl and Mill roads
· Hickory Lane, between Hilltop Road and 400 feet from West Ambassador Drive
· Mill Road, between West Ambassador Drive and Hilltop Road
Truck traffic is heavy in the area because trucks haul cargo from I-78 to a number of warehouses in Lehigh County township. Around 7,350 trucks use Route 100 every day. Since 2013, there have been seven fatal crashes in Upper Macungie Township — five of which involved commercial vehicles.
Though resident complaints about truck traffic have been significant, others within the township are looking for ways to improve safety and efficiency for both residents and truckers. Residents, business owners, and representatives from the trucking industry have come together to form the Good Neighbor Coalition, with the intent of tackling 18-wheeler related issues.
