Snow, high winds, dust, and icy roads are responsible for several multi-vehicle accidents and road closures in Utah.
I-80 Accident Kills One and Injures 25
I-80 in Tooele County reopened yesterday evening after a deadly spring storm caused a multivehicle collision that killed one motorist and left 25 injured last night (April 14).
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, the accident happened when a truck slowed due to poor visibility and 70 MPH winds. Passenger vehicles then slammed into the truck, causing a cascading effect when drivers were unable to see and unable to stop. In the end, at least 6 trucks and at least 11 passenger vehicles were involved in the massive wreck. Many of the trucks toppled over, spilling freight onto the road.
The accident claimed the life of motorist in his 50’s near mile marker 68. Several other people were transported to the hospital for treatment.
Winter Weather Creates Problems For Utah Drivers
The weather-related trouble continues for Utah drivers today as snow and ice caused several accidents. A multivehicle accident has completely halted southbound traffic on I-15 at 600 North.
Whiteout conditions are being reported in Davis County.
7,700 are still without power because of the storms.
Chains Required in Many Areas
In Big and Little Cottonwood canyons, UDOT says that either chains or four-wheel drive is required for all vehicles.
UDOT also announced that in Parleys Canyon, all eastbound traffic will be required to use either chains or four-wheel drive, and westbound trucks in this area must use chains.
Additionally, chains or four wheel drive are required on U.S. 6 through Spanish Fork Canyon.
Snow is expected to continue into the afternoon today.
