Truck Strikes I-80 Overpass Near Iowa City, Catches Fire

Published:

–UPDATE–11:54 a.m.

Iowa State Patrol says two people were taken to the hospital. Both were inside the truck during the crash. One of the people taken to the hospital is in critical condition. Eastbound lanes of I-80 have reopened. All lanes expected to open by noon.

–UPDATE–11:38 a.m.

Dubuque Street bridge has reopened after the Iowa DOT determined it is safe to cross.

There is no word on whether there are injuries after a truck crashed into the Dubuque Street bridge supports on Interstate 80 and then caught fire around 8:15 this morning

I-80 was closed in both directions between Exit 244 (Dubuque Street) and Exit 246 (Dodge Street) while crews cleaned up the fiery accident, but the most recent reports say that some eastbound traffic is now moving. The Dubuque Street bridge is also closed because of concerns about whether the crash compromised the structural integrity of the bridge.

Witnesses said that the truck that crashed into the bridge was a flatbed carrying steel. Other witnesses report that they heard an explosion.
