VIDEO: Iowa DOT Uses Snowplows To Clear Horrifying Number of Mayflies From Road

Published:

This is the stuff of nightmares for many.  Millions (maybe even billions) of mayflies (otherwise known as shadeflies) took over parts of Iowa on Saturday night.

This video was filmed on the Savanna/Sabula bridge over the Mississippi River.

The mayflies are in the height of their hatching season.

The bridge was completely covered with the bugs, making the roadway slippery.  Iowa DOT supervisor, Dick Banowetz, said the bugs were ankle deep.

DOT was called out to plow the insects off the bridge.

Iowa DOT is warning motorists– especially motorcyclists– to approach the bridge with caution.
