At Least Three Dead In 40 Vehicle Pileup On Michigan I-96

At least three people have been killed in an estimated 40 vehicle pileup on I-96 near Fowlerville, Michigan, this morning.

The crash began around 9:30 a.m. between the Williamston and Okemos exits on I-96 when snow blanketed the area, causing near whiteout conditions. The heavy snow and ice on the interstate are said to have caused a series of chain reaction crashes.

All of the known fatalities were in the westbound lanes of I-96.

Serious injuries have been reported, but the number of injuries is still unknown. Many people were trapped in their vehicles.

It’s unclear how many semis vs. passenger vehicles were involved in the crash.

There have been reports of a Good Samaritan running down the median of the interstate to warn other drivers to slow down for the crash.

Transportation officials say I-96 will be shut down in both directions until at least 1 p.m.
