The American Trucking Association says that the truck driver turnover rate took a fairly dramatic dip in the first quarter of 2016, in part because of a soft freight market.
Large fleets saw truck driver turnover drop to 89% from 102% — the lowest it has been since the second quarter of 2015.
Smaller carriers saw trucker turnover drop a single point to 88%, which marks the lowest point since the third quarter of 2015.
At less-than-truckload carriers, turnover dropped three points to 8%, the lowest rate since 2013.
ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello says that the low turnover rates are a result of a slow freight market, but he says he fully expects them to rise again when the market heats up.
