6 Reasons You Shouldn’t Skip Breakfast

Published:

There are a lot of reasons to skip breakfast. You don’t have the time. You don’t have the money. You’re not hungry in the morning. You can’t find good options. But skipping breakfast can have surprising effects on the way you feel, the way you interact with others, and even on the way that you drive! Here are six reasons to make time for breakfast.

  1. 1. You’re more likely to remember that exit number. That’s because breakfast has been shown to have a positive effect on your short term memory, making it easier for you to remember names, dates, and exit numbers.
  2. 2. Breakfast helps your coffee work better. If you can’t get moving in the morning without a coffee or a caffeinated soda, you should know that a breakfast with protein gives that caffeine something to bind with and increases the energy you’ll get from your morning beverage.
  3. 3. A big breakfast can help you lose weight. Not only do breakfast skippers have a higher risk of obesity, a recent study found that people who make breakfast their largest meal of the day lost an average of almost 18 pounds over a three month period.
  4. 4. You’ll be in a better mood. Numerous studies have shown that skipping breakfast makes you irritable and cranky. Breakfast eaters, on the other hand, are more likely to start the day with a positive mood.
  5. 5. You’ll reduce your risk of stroke. A 15-year study of over 80,000 people found that people who never eat breakfast are at increased risk of stroke particularly brain hemorrhage stroke. The same study found that skipping breakfast increases your risk of high blood pressure and heart disease.
  6. 6. Eating breakfast reduces your diabetes risk. A six-year study among women found that those who regularly skip breakfast have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those who make time for a morning meal every day.

Even if you’re pressed for time, anything is better than nothing. A piece of fruit, a cereal bar, or a hardboiled egg would be an easy and inexpensive option that could have a big impact on your mood, driving performance, and overall health.
