Study: Extra Home Time Improves Driver Productivity And Performance

Published:

A new study from Stay Metrics says that not only does more home time help truckers drive better, it also improves the bottom line for the companies they work for.

The study was conducted by Dr. Amir Erez at the University of Florida. He collected data from 682 truck drivers and 6,487 driver-months to study the effects of driver performance when a carrier honored time off requests. The results?

  • When a truck driver’s time off request was honored, he drove an extra 218 miles on average the next month when compared to a driver who did not get home time. This means that that driver who took time off was able to generate an extra $536 in revenue the next month.
  • For each time off request that was granted, a truck driver’s performance based bonus pay rate increased by 3%the next month.
  • Total bonus pay also rose by 5% for drivers who were granted their home time requests.

According to Stay Metrics, trucking companies would be wise to take the results of this study into consideration when they receive home time requests from their drivers: “What this new study shows is that now an argument can be made by fleet operators that home time has productivity and financial benefits as well.
