The Weird Way Your Beard Might Be Keeping You Healthy

Published:

The word “clean” is probably not the first thing you think of when you see a trucker’s beard — but new research shows that being clean shaven isn’t very clean after all.

According to a study of 408 healthcare workers in the Journal of Hospital Infection, men with beards are less likely to be carrying staph infection germs on their faces than their clean shaven counterparts.

Why do beards make such a difference? One theory is that shaving causes trauma to the skin that invites bacterial colonization.

Unbelievably, other researchers believe that beards may have anti-bacterial properties. This conclusion comes after researchers found that swabs from some beard samples were killing other bacteria in a petri dish.
