International Truck announced yesterday that they have launched a new design initiative created with the needs of truck drivers in mind.
International calls the DriverFirst™ initiative an attempt to help their customers attract and retain skilled truck drivers: “Given the industry’s chronic driver shortage, it’s also about having enough drivers to operate those trucks. And for us, that means building trucks that will help our customers attract and retain drivers, by reflecting the driver’s point of view in the way they are designed and the technologies and features they offer. Simply put, we want to build trucks that drivers want to drive.”
International has identified four key points based on research into what drivers want and need.
- Safety — Digital cameras, radar, increased visibility, and better headlights.
- Comfort — Reduced noise and vibration, better ergonomic design for drivers of all shapes and sizes, enhanced interior lighting and color schemes.
- Productivity — Easy maintenance, automated manual transmissions, predictive cruise control.
- Efficiency — Increased fuel economy, more intuitive display design.
International says that they’ll be bringing DriverFirst™ designed trucks to market in the fall of 2016.
