Kansas Is Elevating Overpasses To Stop Truck Strikes

Published:

Transportation officials in Kansas are taking action to prevent truck strikes by raising the clearance height of several of the state’s overpasses.

Construction has begun on a project to raise the clearance on 10 overpasses along 1-35 on the Kansas Turnpike. Some of these overpasses currently only have a clearance of  14’6″ inches, but after the project is complete, the clearance will be raised to 15’9″ on 10 overpasses.

Three of the overpasses have already been raised. The project will be put on hold for the winter and will resume in March.

After these 10 scheduled overpass clearance raises are completed, Kansas transportation officials will consider giving other overpasses on along I-35 the same treatment.

Part of the motivation for lifting the overpasses, according to the Kansas Turnpike Commission, is the hope that trucking companies will be more likely to use the toll roads.
