Kansas Trooper Trying To Avoid Semi Involved In Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash

Published:

A Kansas State Trooper who was trying to avoid a semi leaving a truck stop was involved in a multi-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a motorist.

Crash Occurs In Front Of Spearsville Truck Stop

According to reports, the crash happened yesterday around 7 a.m. on U.S. 50 in Spearsville. Twenty four year old trooper Dillon Keller was traveling east on U.S. 50 to respond to an injury accident with his lights and sirens activated. Truck driver Larry Weimer, 71, was leaving the truck stop and pulled into the eastbound lanes of U.S. 50 in front of Keller.

Keller braked hard and drove onto the shoulder to avoid the semi, then drove back into the eastbound lane before crossing the center line into the westbound lane and hit a Chrysler Sebring on the westbound shoulder. The Sebring, in turn, was pushed back into a Chevy HHR that was behind it.

Motorist Pronounced Dead At The Scene

The Sebring driver, 59 year old Lucinda Lampe, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Keller was taken to the hospital for injuries sustained during the crash.

Weimer and the Chevy HHR driver were not hurt.

It isn’t immediately clear how fast Keller was driving or how far away he was when Weimer pulled onto U.S. 50.

It is not clear if any citations were issued.
