NASCAR Team Owner Buys “Optimus Prime” Truck

NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick is now the proud owner of the 1979 custom Peterbilt that starred as “Optimus Prime” in the Transformers movie series.

Henrick paid $110,000 for the truck at the Barrett-Jackson Collector-Car Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona on Saturday. Though the truck doesn’t transform like it does in the movies, according to Transformers director Michael Bay, the Pete can do donuts at 70 m.p.h. Bay says that he received lots of criticism from fans for his choice of the Peterbilt, but says that the truck was his nod to Steven Spielberg’s “Duel.”

The truck is unfortunately not street legal, but the purchase will earn Hendrick a walk-on role in the next Transformers movie, which will star Mark Wahlberg.
