New Jersey Rolls Out System To Allow Truckers To Bypass Weigh Stations

Published:

New Jersey transportation officials have announced a new pre-clearance program that will allow truck drivers to by pass weigh stations on some of the state’s major highways.

The system is called NJPass and would allow truckers to skip the stop at weigh stations on I-78, I-80 and I-295.

Drivers who participate in the NJPass system will be issued a transponder. If the light on the transponder flashes green when the truck approaches a weigh station, the driver is free to drive on without stopping. If the light on the transponder flashes red, the driver must pull into the weigh station.

The NJPass website says that bypass rates could be as high as 90% and that carriers that have good CSA scores and a good weight compliance history will have the best chance for favorable bypass rating.

New Jersey Highway Patrol officers will also have the power to activate the transponders to pull over trucks for roadside inspections.

All truckers are welcome to enroll in the program, which costs between $24 and $50 per year per truck.

New Jersey says that the program will decrease fuel costs, increase efficiency, and reduce wear and tear for truckers. They also hope that NJPass will result in safer highways, fewer emissions, and decreased backups at weigh stations.
