New York Times Takes On Shady Company’s Truck Rent To Own Practices

Published:

Out of desperation, a small-time trucker contacted the New York Times about the shady rent to own program of the American Truck Group.

Driver James Bryant told the New York Times that the American Truck Group lied about the amount he’d be paying on his new Peterbilt every week — and that they were off by about $450. He was also told that the truck was under warranty, which he found out wasn’t the case after the truck broke down and he was told to keep making weekly payments on it — even though he wasn’t making money anymore. Bryant said that the American Truck Group repossessed the Peterbilt after he fell behind on payments while it was in the shop, and then the company stopped responding to his inquiries. All in all, Bryant claims he sank $40,000 into the truck and now he has nothing to show for it.
