Police Officer Accused Of Accepting Thousands Of Dollars In Bribes In Exchange For Favorable TxDOT Inspections

A San Antonio police officer was arrested yesterday on suspicion of accepting bribes in exchange for giving a local trucking company passing TxDOT inspections.

Officer Faces Eight Counts Of Felony Bribery

Daniel Schmitt, 42, is currently facing eight counts of felony bribery, according to San Antonio police. He was formerly part of a unit that specialized in commercial vehicle enforcement.

According to reports, Schmitt was no longer working for the commercial vehicle enforcement unit when he was accused of performing truck inspections “on the side.” The Texas Department of Public Safety also said that they had learned that Schmitt was being paid to give passing inspections to one particular local trucking company.

Schmitt was placed on administrative duty while the San Antonio Police Department investigated the allegations against him. He was suspended indefinitely a few weeks ago.

Trucking Company Allegedly Paid For Favorable TxDOT Inspections

Court records indicate the Schmitt allegedly accepted $7400 from Texas Chrome Transport Inc. since 2013. Investigators also say that Schmitt paid Johnny Diaz, another police officer, $400 for a favorable inspection for Texas Chrome Transport. Diaz turned himself in last week.

Schmitt’s bond was set at $20,000.
