A tractor trailer hauling thousands of unstamped pennies overturned early this morning, spilling coins all over the northbound lanes of I-95 in Delaware.
The crash happened just before 2 a.m. near the I-295 split. A semi en route to the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia overturned for unknown reasons, spilling 40,000 pounds of pennies all over the northbound lanes of I-95. The truck caught fire during the crash.

The truck driver was not seriously injured.
Hazmat crews were on the scene as it was suspected that the truck also leaked fuel when it crashed.
Crews have been working to clean up the pennies all morning, forcing DelDOT to shutdown the northbound lanes of I-95 for hours.

At least one lane has reopened, but the crash has caused severe traffic backups in the area. Transportation officials say that they’ll have more lanes open as soon as possible.
