Stuck Truck In Smuggler’s Notch Could Set You Back $2000

A recently passed law would punish truck drivers who get stuck in Vermont’s Smuggler’s Notch by fining them up to $2000.

Truckers Ignore Signs, Follow GPS, To Smuggler’s Notch

Transportation officials say that trucks get stuck in the narrow pass through the Green Mountains in Stowe each year, often shutting down traffic for hours.

Though there are many signs that warn truckers to stay away, many truck drivers end up on Smuggler’s Notch simply because they rely too heavily upon their GPS devices.

Heavier Fines May Reduce The Number Of Stuck Trucks

Though stuck trucks have been a problem for years, police have only been able to issue fines of $162. The new law would allow law enforcement to fine truck drivers $1000 for using the road and up to $2000 if their use of the road impedes traffic.

Lawmakers hope that heavier fines will get the attention of the trucking community and reduce the number of stuck trucks.

Unless Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin decides to veto the law, it will go into effect July 1.
