Self-Driving Truck “Otto” To Hit Ohio Roads Today

Published:

Ohio transportation officials have announced that a “driverless” Otto semi truck will be traveling on public roads in regular traffic today.

The Otto truck will make a 35 mile test run on U.S. Route 33 between Dublin and East Liberty without anyone in the driver’s seat, though a professional truck driver will be on hand in case anything goes amiss. East Liberty is home to an independent testing facility called the Transportation Research Center.

The autonomous truck is also expected to make an appearance on the Ohio Turnpike some time this week, but details of that run have not been released.

Ohio Governor John Kasich has announced plans to install a fiber-optic cable network and sensor system on part of U.S. Route 33 in order to allow real life testing of new transportation technologies.
