Car Pooling Workers Headed Home Involved In Head On Crash With Truck

The incident began when five workers were car pooling home from a shift at a packaging plant. They were headed north on Route 100 just before 4 p.m. Wednesday when the car crossed a grassy median and went airborne into the southbound lanes of Route 222 — directly in the path of a tractor trailer.

The car split into pieces. Both the car and the truck caught fire. All five people in the car were killed, but investigators say it may take some time to identify them because of the extent of the damage to the bodies.

All Five Car Occupants Killed, Trucker Escapes With Minor Injuries

Truck driver Richard Eckrote was able to get out of his rig with only minor injuries. He wrote on Facebook about the crash, “I am going home soon, sad day. All checked out good at the hospital. Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers.

Route 222 was shut down for 9 hours while police investigated the incident.

The coroner said that this was one of the worst crashes he had seen in his 30 year career.

Police are still working to determine why the car crossed over the median into oncoming traffic. If you witnessed the crash or have any information, please call officer Joshua Forrester at 484-661-5911, Ext. 352.
