Fake State Trooper Making Traffic Stops In North Carolina

Published:

A North Carolina sheriff has issued a warning about a man impersonating a State Trooper who is performing traffic stops and may pose a threat to drivers.

The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office says that the suspect has conducted false traffic stops in Sneads Ferry twice in three days. According to reports, the man pulled over a driver on Monday and then again on Wednesday. The suspect tried to get the woman he pulled over to get into his vehicle during the Wednesday traffic stop, but she was suspicious and called 911.

So far, the impersonator appears to be targeting female drivers, but the Sheriff’s Office says all drivers in the area should use extra caution.

Authorities are looking for a tall Caucasian man in his late 20’s or early 30’s who drives an unmarked dark-colored Dodge Charger with a large antenna. He has been seen wearing a black jacket and a baseball type hat with a North Carolina Highway Patrol patch on it.

If a suspicious person tries to pull you over, police say to call 911 and then drive to a public place like a gas station or open business. A legitimate officer will have no problem with you verifying his identity.

Anyone with information leading to the arrest of the impersonator could receive a $2500 reward by calling the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office at 910-455-3113.
