Carriers Face Penalties If They Don’t Take Dangerous Recalled Volvo Trucks Off The Road

Published:

The FMCSA says that a newly detected steering shaft defect in certain Volvo trucks is so dangerous that carriers could face penalties if that fail to place the trucks out of service as soon as possible.

Over 17,000 Volvo Trucks Impacted By Recall

The recall affects over 17,000 Class 8 Volvo trucks operating in the U.S. that were manufactured between May 11, 2015 though March 8, 2016. The recalled models are certain 2016 and 2017 Volvo VNL, VNM, and VNX as well as 2016 and 2017 Mack Titan trucks.

Steering Shaft Defect May Cause Sudden Loss Of Control

The recalled trucks have a faulty two-piece steering shaft which could result in the sudden loss of steering ability. Because of the significant risk of crashing while driving the recalled trucks, carriers are urged to take them out of service immediately.

Because the operation of a vehicle in a condition likely to cause an accident or a breakdown is a safety violation, carriers could face enforcement actions or even civil penalties if they don’t take the recalled Volvos off the road.

Volvo is working on a final solution to replace all two part steering shafts with one part steering shafts, which should correct the problem.

Volvo has pledged to provide rental vehicles for drivers impacted by the recall. They will also cover the cost of towing if necessary.
