Published:

The Cummins Seymour Technical Center in Seymour, Indiana, is closed until at least Monday following a murder-suicide on Thursday.

Police Respond To Active Shooter Situation At Cummins Facility

Indiana State Police were called to respond to an active shooter situation after two to four gunshots were heard in the Cummins facility around 8:40 a.m.

Thirty-seven year old Qing Chen and his direct manager, Ward R. Edwards, 49, were found dead in a conference room just before 9 a.m. Chen had apparently shot Edwards fatally before turning the gun on himself.

Police recovered a 9 millimeter Glock from the scene. Authorities had the plant secured by about 9:30.

The shootings triggered a lockdown at both the Seymour facility and the nearby Columbus, Indiana plant as well as several area schools and businesses. Police escorted many of the shaken employees out of the building.

Police Search For Answers Following Murder-Suicide

Investigators are trying to learn more about the relationship between Chen and Edwards. A warrant has been served to allow police to search the vehicles and homes of both Chen and Edwards. Autopsies will be performed on both men today.

Cummins officials told employees to go home until at least Monday while company leaderships works on how to respond to the tragedy.

Seymour is described as a close-knit town of about 19,000 residents. 1,100 employees work at the Cummins plant.
