Rest Area Coming To Long Island Expressway — But Trucks Aren’t Allowed

Published:

Exit 51 on the Long Island Expressway is getting a new rest area with impressive amenities, but truck drivers won’t be able to enjoy them, because commercial vehicle parking isn’t allowed.

Rest Area Renovation Project Includes Provision To Ban Truck Parking

The major renovation project includes a 15,200-square-foot Welcome Center with improved lighting, on-site security, video surveillance, and 135 parking spots — for motorists, not truckers. Trucks will also be banned from parking along the service road near the new facility.

Locals Led The Charge Against Truck Parking

Originally, transportation officials planned to allow truck parking at the facility, but residents angrily protested the idea.

Instead of parking at the rest area, trucks are being directed to stop at the DOT maintenance facility at Exit 56.

Work on the new rest stop will start next week.
