No Charges Filed In Red Light Runner Bus Crash That Killed Trucker And 3 Others

Published:

No charges have yet been filed following a bus vs. semi crash early Saturday morning in Florida that left the truck driver and three others dead and 25 people injured.

Bus Runs Red Light, Causing Fatal Crash

The crash happened around 5:20 a.m. at an intersection in Wakulla County, Florida. A semi driven by 55 year old New Yorker Gordon Sheets was traveling west on U.S. 98 when it was hit by a Blue Bird bus that ran a red light. According to reports, the bus hit the truck, spun around, and hit the truck again. Both vehicles went off the road and came to a stop under a power line. Both the truck and the bus caught fire.

The bus was carrying about 34 passengers.

Four Dead, 25 Injured In Crash

Sheets died as a result of the fiery crash. Three of the bus passengers, including a child, were killed.

The semi’s passenger, 21-year-old Rafael Nieves, was not hurt during the crash.

The bus driver, 56 year old Elie Dupiche, was transported to the hospital in critical condition. 24 others were also injured in the crash.

Police say that the crash could have been even more deadly had Wakulla County Sheriff’s deputies not boarded the burning bus to pull passengers to safety.

Cause Of Crash Still Under Investigation

No charged have been filed. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash. Speed is not a suspected factor, but police admit that fatigue could have been a factor.
