Skateboarder Hitching Ride On Mack Truck Crushed To Death Under Wheels

Published:

A New York skateboarder was killed yesterday when he was hitching a ride on a truck and was run over.

The incident happened after 1 p.m. yesterday in New York’s Lower East Side. Richard Oates, 32, was hanging on to the passenger side of a green Mack truck that was hauling a shipping container when the truck changed lanes and hit a bump in the road. Oates fell off the skateboard and was run over by the rear wheels of the truck.

The truck driver did not immediately stop because he was apparently unaware that he had hit anything. However, once the truck driver realized what had happened, he stopped and stayed on the scene.

By the time medical personnel arrived on the scene, Oates was unresponsive. He was later declared dead at a nearby hospital.

No charges have been filed against the truck driver at this time. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Oates had recently given up a career as a chef to open a skate shop. He is survived by a wife and two young children.
