Trucker Slammed With $3500 Fine After Getting Stuck In Smugglers Notch

Published:

A truck driver was issued a huge fine after getting stuck on a road through Smugglers Notch in Cambridge, Vermont, for about four hours last night.

Troopers arrived on the scene at southbound Route 108 at about 9:15 last night to find 53 year old Florida based trucker Valdes Gernardo stuck on the narrow road. Police allowed Gernardo to try to back down on his own, but he wasn’t able to do so, so a wrecker was in called to assist.

The road finally reopened at 1 a.m.

According to reports, Gernardo was issued $3,544 in fines.

On July 1, Vermont lawmakers passed a rule that allowed them to increase the fine for stuck trucks from $162 to $2000, a move that they hoped would discourage trucks from entering Smugglers Notch, which has several signs warning that truck traffic is not allowed.

On August 14, a Massachusetts based trucker was stuck in Smugglers Notch for over an hour and was issued a $2000 fine.
