Two Truckers Killed When Semi Crashes Into Military Vehicle That Fell Off Flatbed

Published:

A fiery crash on I-80 in Tooele County, Utah, cost two truckers their lives and has forced the closure of the interstate.

The crash happened sometime around 3 a.m. close to the I-80 State Route 196 junction. Police say that a flatbed truck hauling a military vehicle was traveling east on I-80 when it rolled, causing the military vehicle to roll into the westbound lanes. Moments later, a FedEx truck hauling double trailers in the westbound lanes crashed into the military vehicle.

The FedEx truck caught fire after the crash. Crews were able to extinguish the fire by 6:15 a.m.

The flatbed driver and the co-driver in the FedEx truck were killed in the crash. The driver of the FedEx truck was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive.

Police say that the FedEx driver was not at fault because it was so dark: “When it’s dark like this and obviously when something is in the roadway, you’re not expecting, especially a large military vehicle to be in the roadway and I’m sure it was extremely hard to see.

Investigators are still working to determine why the flatbed truck crashed.

I-80 has been shut down in both directions for a seven mile stretch between Exit 77 near Grantsville and Exit 84 and could remain closed for several more hours.
