Military Veteran Werner Driver Wins New Truck

Published:

A Navy veteran and Werner driver won a new Kenworth T680 after being named the nation’s top rookie driver, helping him to achieve his goal of becoming an owner-operator.

Driver Troy Davidson beat out 40 other nominees in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring our Heroes competition. Runners up Russell Hardy and Kevin Scott each received a $10,000 prize.

Davidson called the win “life-changing” and said that he was “humbled” by the honor.

While in the service, Davidson served as a jet engine mechanic. He also worked as a mechanic for the Blue Angels. Since returning to civilian life, Davidson has worked as a company driver for Werner since September 2015. He volunteers with the Make A Wish Foundation in his free time.

After winning the top prize of a fully loaded Kenworth T680, Davidson says that he plans to become an owner-operator. He says he plans to stay with Werner.

When accepting the win, Davidson took time out to honor the sacrifices that truckers make every day: “You have to realize, most things in your house, everything you eat, the vehicles you drive, the clothes you wear, everything has been brought to you – one way or another – by a truck driver. If it wasn’t for the guys that made those sacrifices that aren’t home on the holidays, that have to drive in inclement weather, you wouldn’t have that.

The Hiring Our Heroes program was created to help veterans find civilian work.
