FMCSA Orders Drunk Trucker Who Changed Pants At 63 MPH Out Of Service

Published:

The FMCSA has ordered a Connecticut truck driver who crashed his truck while changing his pants to immediately cease commercial vehicle operations.

Pants Change Results In Single Vehicle Crash

Sixty-two-year-old truck driver Allen Johnson Sr. crashed his truck on November 2 on I-89 in Vermont. After setting cruise control to keep the truck at a steady 63 m.p.h., police said that “he stood up from his driver’s seat and was attempting to change his pants in the front cab. Johnson was standing up vertically between the two front cab seats while his truck was in motion.”

Not surprisingly, the truck veered off the road and rolled over on its side.

A blood alcohol test revealed that Johnson had a BAC of 0.209 percent — five times the legal limit for commercial vehicle operators.

Driver Could Also Face Civil And Criminal Penalties

Johnson’s out of service order states that his “continued operation of a commercial motor vehicle substantially increases the likelihood of serious injury or death to [himself] and to the motoring public if not discontinued immediately.”

The FMCSA is also considering leveling civil and criminal penalties against Johnson.
