Fireworks Haulers Granted HOS Waivers Through 2020

Published:

The FMCSA has granted fireworks haulers with the American Pyrotechnics Association exemption from Hours of Service requirements during the Fourth of July holiday through 2020.

The 51 motor carriers of the APA were granted an exemption to Hours of Service rules that they can exclude mid-period off-duty or sleeper-berth time from their 14 hour on duty window. The exempted drivers can’t drive after 14 hours on duty and they still have to limit themselves to an 11 hour driving day. They also have to honor the 60 and 70 hour weekly limits.

The exemption period lasts from June 28 through July 8 at 11:59 p.m

The exemption is designed to keep costs of fireworks displays down, as adhering to the standard regulations might require that companies hire an extra truck driver.

The FMCSA has granted the APA this exemption since 2004.
