Governor Considers Closing Popular Connecticut Rest Stop

Published:

Faced with mounting budget issues, Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy is considering shutting down a heavily used rest area off I-84 in Southington.

The state is looking for nearly half a billion dollars to balance its budget. Malloy’s plan is to close the Southington rest area along with another rest area off of I-84 in Willington and a welcome center in Westbrook. Malloy would also reduce operations at the state’s 30 other rest areas. These changes would save the state $1.2 million.

The plan has drawn a fair amount of criticism. State Senator Joe Markley said, “It’s not where I would look for savings. I’ve been familiar with that rest area all my life, and it always seems to be heavily used.”

Several members of the trucking community also expressed concern for public safety if tired truckers were forced to continue driving to find a place to rest.
