A truck driver owes his life to a family and other Good Samaritans who stopped to help after a crash in Fannin County, Texas, on Monday.
The crash happened on Highway 78 north of Bonham on Monday afternoon. A truck driver hauling silica sand said that a vehicle stopped suddenly in front of him, so he made the split second decision to swerve off the road to avoid killing or hurting the motorists.
The truck crashed off the road into a ditch at Wolf Creek, trapping the driver. The driver’s side of the truck soon caught fire.
Several Good Samaritans saw the crash and stopped to help, including Robert Wilkerson and his mother Trina.
Wilkerson said that he could hear the driver pleading for help when he approached the truck.
It took Wilkerson and help from three other Good Samaritans to open the passenger side door of the truck.
The truck driver had broken his leg during the crash and couldn’t walk, so Wilkerson, his mother, and one other Good Samaritan pulled him out of the truck and carried him away from the crash site.
The driver was flown to a nearby hospital.
Most Good Samaritan stories would end here, but this one doesn’t. The Wilkerson family was so concerned about the trucker that they went to visit him in the hospital to check on him. They said that he remembers the crash.
The Wilkersons also say that they plan to buy the driver a new pair of boots because his were ruined in the crash.
The crash is still under investigation.
