Truck Crashes Into Home, SUV, At Bottom of Gordon Mountain

Published:

Though PennDOT agreed to ban trucks from Gordon Mountain Road in December, it was not enough to keep a truck from crashing into a woman’s yard, sideswiping her home and totaling her SUV.

Truck Crashes Into Home And Vehicle At Bottom Of Gordon Mountain

The crash happened around 4 a.m. on Wednesday when a truck hauling watermelons lost control at the bottom of the Gordon Mountain in Schuylkill County and crashed into a home and SUV owned by Carole Cheeseman.

In the 15 years Cheeseman has lived in the home, she says she’s had to deal with about a dozen truck crashes. Said Cheeseman: “I start to fix the house and this happens. It just frustrates. It’s not nice what I want to say.”

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

PennDOT: Total Truck Ban Coming Soon

Currently, all trucks over 19 tons are banned from Gordon Mountain, but because of the frequency of crashes, PennDOT has agreed to implement a total truck ban. There are numerous signs in the area warning truck drivers over 19 tons to stay off the road. PennDOT hopes to have signage up enforcing the total truck ban by summer.

However, residents and local law enforcement say that without proper police enforcement, the ban is pointless. The town of Gordon does not have its own police force, so it subcontracts its law enforcement to Butler Township. Through the Butler Township force attempts to do some truck enforcement, they simply don’t have the manpower required to really enforce the truck ban, according to locals.

Last September, three trucks crashed at the bottom of the mountain in three days.

The truck driver was cited for violating the 19 ton ban. The driver’s employer will likely be responsible for the thousands of dollars of damage that the truck did to Cheeseman’s property.
