Truck Plunges Into Water From Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

Published:

Police say that a truck driver went through a guardrail and plunged off of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel into the bay below this afternoon.

The incident happened around 3 p.m. today when a truck driver in the southbound lanes reportedly attempted to maneuver around a slower vehicle, then somehow lost control and crashed through the guardrail.

By the time rescuers arrived, the truck driver was floating in the water. They were able to rescue him by tossing him a life preserver.

The truck driver suffered injuries to his arm, chest, and head but is expected to survive. He is being treated at the Norfolk General Hospital.

The crash caused major delays, but as of 4 p.m., all lanes but one had reopened.

The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation.
