Trucker Arrested For Pointing Gun At Motorists

Published:

A Michigan trucker has been arrested after allegedly threatening two female drivers with a gun on I-75 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The incident happened on Friday. According to one of the motorists, Amanda Witt, the truck driver was swerving  all over the road in front of her. Witt said that when she tried to pass the truck, driver Richard James Sweeney, 64, pointed a firearm at them out the drivers side window in a threatening manner. Witt said that after she passed Sweeney, he swerved across the road and braked hard, coming to an almost complete stop.

Another female driver traveling behind Witt, Tonya Green, also tried to pass Sweeney’s truck out of concern for the safety of the children in her vehicle. She said that Sweeney also threatened her with a gun as she attempted to pass and then slammed on the brakes and swerved toward her vehicle as she tried to pass.

When police caught up with Sweeney, he was combative during the arrest. They found marijuana, a marijuana pipe, and unopened liquor bottles in his truck, as well as a 22 caliber handgun.

Sweeney has been charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
