Port Authority police nabbed a New Jersey trucker who they say bent up his license plate to avoid paying thousands of dollars worth of tolls.
According to reports, 44 year old truck driver Melvin Ralph was crossing the Goethals Bridge to Staten Island this week when a police officer noticed that his truck’s license plate was unreadable. After pulling Ralph over, police saw that the front plate was bent up and loosely tied to the front grill with wire. The trailer had a different license plate that was not registered to the truck.
Police say that Ralph was using a revoked E-ZPass device. They found that he had 71 toll violations and had racked up $13,649.25 in unpaid tolls. They also discovered that his driver’s license was suspended.
Ralph’s truck was impounded and he was charged with larceny, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
