This incredible dash cam video captures not only the crash that happened last week when the brakes failed on an out-of-service truck on Route 17 in New York but also the moment that Good Samaritans pull a woman from one of the burning wrecked cars.
Police: Truck Did Not Stop For Traffic In Construction Zone
The crash happened last Thursday at 4:22 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Route 17 when traffic slowed for construction. According to police, a truck hauling stone blocks driven by 74 year old Allen R. Kirkpatrick did not stop in time and collided with nine other vehicles.
Ten people were hospitalized because of the crash, but all are expected to survive. One of the crash victims was pulled out of her burning car by Good Samaritans.
Driver Cited, Crash Under Investigation
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, but investigators say that brake problems were not the only cause of the crash: “The tractor-trailer’s inadequate brakes were a contributing factor to the crash but not the reason it occurred,” stated Binghamton Deputy Mayor Jared Kraham. The New York Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit is working with Binghamton police on the investigation.
Kirkpatrick was cited for driving an out of service vehicle. It is unclear why the truck was placed out of service. The company that he drives for, Wyalusing Transport Inc., has a 58% out of service vehicle rate.
