A bus driver lost his life over the weekend when he was hit by a California Highway Patrol cruiser as he was setting up reflective triangles.
The incident happened on Saturday just before 8 p.m. on eastbound I-80 near Truckee. Charter bus driver Steve Holmes saw a vehicle overturn and stopped to help. Holmes called 911 and stopped the bus on the interstate to block other drivers from crashing into the disabled vehicle. A CHP officer arrived on the scene and was backing up on the interstate to close a lane of traffic. As he did, he reportedly struck Holmes with his cruiser as he was placing reflective triangles in the roadway.
Holmes suffered serious injuries and passed away in the hospital.
Holmes was an Air Force veteran and drove a school bus for more than a decade.
CHP is investigating the incident.
